M-1911 Models : Detonics USA

The name Detonics should be familiar to any one who has been around the M-1911 world for some years. The company has gone down for some time, but now it seems they are back in bysiness, with the following models (descriptions from the manufacturer's web site). Let's welcome them in the 1911 world.

CombatMaster

The CombatMaster is a close concealment gun, superior as a backup or in primary defense. From the very first, the tang was minimized and the vestigial grip safety pinned. The hammer spur is in keeping with this minimalist concept as well.

The Detonics CombatMaster’s six-round magazine was completely reliable despite its diminutive size. It even incorporated a loaded magazine indicator which protruded past the floorplate when the fully-loaded magazine was inserted into a pistol with an already chambered round. A full-size automobile could be parked on top of a fully-loaded Detonics magazine without any damage being done. Detonics magazines are just as tough and reliable today.

Features Pioneered by Detonics:

  • Functional reliability in a 1911-style pistol which was smaller than any ever manufactured before;
  • Cone-shaped barrel which required no bushing;
  • Recoil system with counter-recoiling multiple springs;
  • Recoil spring guide rod with buffer;
  • Springs easily removable for disassembly because they are not loaded under tension;
  • Ejection port lowered and scalloped for more positive ejection and to spare damage to brass;
  • First stainless steel semi-automatic pistol to overcome the metallurgical problem known as galling;
  • First semi-automatic to use a 3-Dot Sighting System
  • Loaded magazine indicator
  • Repositioned (forward) rear sight and sloped rear of slide in order to facilitate thumb cocking when the pistol is carried hammer down;
  • Heavier firing pin spring than conventional 1911-style pistols introduced as a safety feature against the pistol being dropped on a hard surface, thus helping guard against accidental discharge;
  • Feed ramp polished to mirror finish and chamber orifice rounded in order to enhance feeding;
  • Torsional spring extractor capable of radial movement rather than just in and out movement.

ScoreMaster

The full-size ScoreMaster was and is Detonics’ “target” pistol, complete with adjustable sights.

The ScoreMaster’s useful beavertail grip safety and ambi-safety help to round out the target gun package. An original Detonics eight-round extension magazine is in the background.

Another bow to the target pistol image is this ScoreMaster’s extended magazine release. Despite the target look, the ScoreMaster was and is fully reliable with any hollowpoints, built strong enough to handle the sizzling .451 Detonics Magnum merely by changing barrels.

ServiceMaster

The ServiceMaster is the mid-sized Detonics .45. With the slide locked open the Detonics' characteristic belled muzzle is readily apparent.
