M-1911 Models Ace Custom

I know that Ace Custom is a quite well-known pistolsmith shop, but the only information I have about their products is the .45 Super gun described below.

An interesting conversion of a classic M-1911 to use the hot .45 Super cartridge, which is capable of handling 30.000 cup of pressure, versus the 19.000 cup's of the standard .45 ACP. The gun uses a dual spring recoil system, with a full length guide rod (which is also available for the standard .45 ACP pistols), Millet sights, beavertail grip safety, Bar-Sto barrel, Briley barrel bushing, etc. The ammunition used are produced by Triton and offered at two varieties, one with 185 gr bullet at 1200 fps and one 200 gr bullet at 1150 fps. Interestingly enough the cases of these cartridges are Robar NP3 coated. It has also come to my attention that another firm, Texas Ammunition Company is also producing loads for the .45 Super.

Another .45 Super Gun (325 Kb)

This is another .45 Super conversion performed by Ace Custom. This gun was a Nowling made pistol build on an Enterprise frame, before it received the attention of the gunsmiths at Ace. It is a high-capacity pistol, which features a bull barrel (thus eliminating the need for a barrel bushing), and two Magna-port cuts on the barrel and slide (to reduce recoil). It also has a very strange looking recoil spring system, which is an Ace's proprietary design. In this trim, the pistol is capable of handling the .45 Super cartridge like a champ. My only objection to this pistol is the squared trigger guard. The photos for this pistol were obtained from the January 1999 issue of Handguns.

The .45 Super conversion can be done on either M-1911s of Government or Commander size, or on certain S&W .45 pistols. Ace Custom are also offering all the necessary parts for this conversion, in a kit form, for the D-I-Y gunsmiths (order it through their web site). This link provides you with the background of the .45 Super concept, while you can also read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about it (both these links open new browser windows, close them to return here).
